Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Are You an Introvert Who Needs to Be More Social Over at the Fast Track blog, we received the following question: My manager knows that I want to become a manager myself at some point, and is working on mentoring me in the skills I’ll need. One piece of feedback he’s given me is that I need to become more comfortable in semi-social situations (networking lunches or event dinners, and the like). I’m not a terribly social person by nature, so I tend to feel a bit shy and out-of-place in situations like that. I’ve decided the career I want is worth it, but do you have any advice for a fellow introvert who needs to learn to be more social? Heres my answer: As an introvert myself who has been in the same situation and feels your pain, I’d recommend looking at the managerial (i.e. more social) job as a role you are playing, one in which you are a bit more self-confident, outgoing and talkative. Practice your overtures and responses with trusted family and friends, just as you might rehearse lines with them if you were in a play, and then gradually try out new approaches with your colleagues. Don’t overload your schedule with too many events at the beginning as the goal is to expose yourself to a fearful situation over time so that it becomes less intimidating. As an introvert, it will probably help you to have time to prepare, so ask for as much notice as possible when you are expected to attend a function. Find out exactly who you are meeting, what you’ll be doing, and how long you’ll likely stay. At the event, if you feel yourself fading, take a few short breaks to get some fresh air, or just chill out by yourself. Recognize too that these types of social interactions are naturally more energy-depleting for introverts, so allow yourself time later that day or the next time to replenish your reserves. Do you believe this is even possible in the social media world? Between online and offline connections, dont you think that people will end up revealing the real brand you anyways? First impressions, and how people are perceived in general, have changed so much in the past few years, that its harder to promote yourself as a confident person, when someone might video you or greet you in a public situation. If weve learned anything from Mark Zuckerberg, and Gen-Y, its that most people have acceptable the end of privacy on the web. People want their network, or fans, to know what they are doing at all times. We get excited at comments because it shows that people care about them and what they have to say. Not everyone has revealed their true identity though, out of fear, and certain insecurities. The web is a harsh place and you will be judged and ridiculed, whether you like it or not. There are three major concepts you should understand, including paying dues, making it, and faking it till you make it. Below is my analysis of each one and I look forward to your comments. Paying dues Paying dues: Earning the right to something through hard work. A lot of older people tell young people that they havent paid their dues yet, meaning that they havent worked hard enough to earn respect. The respect comes from having a track record of success, doing work that you wouldnt necessary call emotional labor, and work that management passes down. For musicians, this means doing local touring, giving away free CDs and promotional products, in order to build up a large enough fan base that record labels would pay attention. For authors, the situation is quite similar in that you need to build a platform to market your book before you get an offer. For the average worker, paying dues is working long hours, putting in a lot of effort, supporting your manager, in hopes that you will get a promotion or some form of competition. Making it Making it: No longer having to pay dues, reaping the rewards of making more money, with less effort. When someone becomes an executive or a platinum artist or even a bestselling author, we immediately think theyve made it. In this way, we look at them like they cant fail and that they will become massively successful and rich. The problem with this saying is that its an illusion. Im sure youve watched the One Hit Wonders TV program on VH1 before. Just because you feel like youve made it doesnt mean youre set for life by any means. In fact, I believe you have to pay dues for your entire life, at some level, especially if you want to expand your brand and business into new areas. The economy is unpredictable, and organization hierarchies change constantly, which means you   will probably get stuck paying dues learning a new area or job role. Faking it till you make it Faking it till you make it: Pretending that you have confidence to become confident when youre actually successful. People who are in sales typically try and fake it by purchasing luxury cars so that they dont appear poor to their clients. Think about it, if I was trying to sell someone on an investment, and they saw that I drove a Kia, I would lose credibility, even if thats all I could afford. You have to appear rich to mentally convince the customer that what youre selling them will make them rich as well. Is this honest? No, but when youre first starting out, it might be the only way to brand yourself in certain fields. Does everyone have to known that youre faking it? No, but if they find out through a third party, you will lose credibility and there will be negative word-of-mouth spread. Your turn Are you faking it till you make it? Well brace yourself Ms. Career Girl â€" you are in for a treat. Success is actually much simpler than what you were led to believe. This is a “magical formula” (or just some common sense)that is really rather simple. Here are the 3 must haves for your ultimate success as a career girl: 1. Passion You have to be passionate about what you’re doing. This doesn’t mean you have to be 110% on fire about everything you do. Sometimes you don’t love everything in life, and that’s normal. For example, I don’t enjoy handling some of the technical things in my business. I’ve been able to outsource more as my business has grown, but in the beginning, I did everything myself. What you should be passionate about is making a difference in people’s lives. You need to feel the urge, the excitement, the sizzling feeling of endless ideas to make your work even better. It’s important to note that you don’t have to be crystal clear, because you can’t predict the future. You just have to start and keep moving. 2. Skills The next pillar is skills. This doesn’t mean you have to have years of experience in something. It could be life experiences as well. For example, if you’re a mom who has just lost a lot of weight, you can help other moms do the same thing, because you’ve been there and done that. If you want to get certified as a personal trainer later, that’s fine, but it shouldn’t stop you from starting. However, there are times and professions when you will need extra training, and that’s fine,too.  Go and get that training, but remember, you can still start taking active steps towards making this dream come true. Get an internship, volunteer, read all the books in that niche or start a blog on your progress… just don’t freeze in lack of action. 3. Mindset â€" The last ingredient is controlling your mindset and trusting the process. If you believe in it and yourself, then you will make progress. Yes the road might get bumpy, there might be challenges, and chances are you will get stuck and confused throughout the process. The important thing to remember is that you won’t get this perfect, so don’t even have to try to get there. Focus on taking action and experimenting, because that’s when you learn what works and what doesn’t. By working on your mindset in fact you will set an intention that you have to be successful, so there is no other way! Success IS That Simple So there you have it.
